about

TL;DR:
These songs were inspired by Richard Kadrey's series of excellent Sandman Slim urban fantasy books (richardkadrey.com/slim-series/). I'm thankful to him for letting me play around in his world. I'm a fan, and this is fan music. I hope you enjoy it.

These songs were inspired by Richard Kadrey's series of excellent Sandman Slim urban fantasy books (richardkadrey.com/slim-series/). I'd seen Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury's Drokk (drokk.bandcamp.com) and thought something similar might be a fun summer project. I ran it past Richard and he thought it sounded like a fun idea, but this is an unofficial thing and I intend no copyright infringement anything from the books. (HarperCollins: you need but say the word and this becomes "A Nowhere Jukebox: Music from Sandy Slender, Skinny Hatchetman.")

I left the song titles a little vague to try and avoid spoilers, and the songs jump around all over the books. It was interesting to find I almost invariably have an attention span of about a minute and 30 seconds.

"Volume 1:" I kept a few in the chamber for next round, to start the next batch with a ragged edge, instead of a blank slate. I have pages of notes and folders of half-finished recording files. Plus, you know, 13 seemed a good number.

I've known Richard for about 20 years, and hadn't done music for about 10. I'm thankful to him for letting me play around in his world. I'm a fan, and this is fan music. I hope you enjoy it.

P.S. I don't have the hearing or temperament to be a mastering engineer, so these are pretty much rough mixes. If something's completely out of whack, please let me know so I can fix it.

P.P.S. Thanks to Love Ablan (www.loveablan.com) for the album design practice.

COLOPHON For Gear Nerds Only

HARDWARE
Most of the pieces of hardware I used, with the exception of maybe the Ibanez and Fernandes guitars and the UX2 interface, can be had for around 50 bucks or so. It's a low-rent operation around here.

Ibanez Artcore AF75TDG, GFS Surf 90 pickups
Samson R21 mic
$60 Yamaha EG112 Strat
$70 Jackson JS22? pointy metal guitar
$50 Squier Jazz Bass
Fernandes Telecaster
Line6 UX2 audio interface
Korg NanoKey2 controller
Grado SR-80 headphones
Lepai LP2020A+ amp
Dayton Audio speakers

SOFTWARE
I am amazed at the sounds currently available for little or no money. Reaper is $60 and certainly more powerful than I'll ever fully utilize. The rest is freeware or pay-what-you-want-ware. The Poulin plugins for supermetal guitar are actually what started me back into music again, oddly, and for that I thank their creator.
